Therapet

Helping individuals feel safe around animals

Research shows that while it is difficult to pinpoint an exact figure, a significant number of autistic individuals experience a fear of animals, particularly dogs.

Some studies suggest that up to 30 percent of people on the autism spectrum may also have a diagnosed phobia. At Opeka, we recognise that several of our participants feel anxious or uncomfortable around pets, and we take this into account when planning activities.

To help reduce this anxiety in a supportive and gradual way, we occasionally organise visits from Therapet, a charity that provides trained therapy dogs specifically for people with additional support needs. These dogs are carefully selected and expertly handled to create a calm and reassuring presence. The aim is not to force interaction, but to allow participants to engage on their own terms, helping them to build trust, confidence, and a sense of safety around animals over time.

Therapy Dogs

A gentle approach to overcoming fear

Therapet visits are optional, respectful of each person’s comfort level, and always supported by staff who are familiar with the needs of our group. For many, these visits have become a positive and empowering experience, offering a gentle introduction to dogs in a controlled and friendly environment.

By creating safe and gradual opportunities for exposure, Opeka supports individuals to overcome personal barriers at their own pace. Whether a participant chooses to watch from a distance or offer a gentle stroke, these moments are valuable steps towards reducing fear and building emotional resilience.

Join in the fun!

At Opeka, every day is a chance to try something new, discover hidden talents, and build confidence in a welcoming and supportive space.

Whether it’s through creative expression, hands-on activities, or simply joining in, we believe in the power of participation to spark joy and personal growth. You don’t need experience—just an open mind and a willingness to give it a go.

More than just activities, Opeka is a place where friendships are formed, laughter is shared, and everyone is encouraged to be themselves. It’s about growing together, learning from each other, and celebrating every step forward. Whatever your interests or abilities, you’ll find something here that inspires you.
