Growing Together in the Garden

In March of this year, we proudly launched our Wednesday Gardening Groups in response to the growing demand for nature-based activities among our participants.

These sessions are made possible through a fantastic collaboration with Eaglesham Community Garden, a beautiful and tranquil space located just behind the Carswell Centre. The garden features a variety of raised beds, fruit trees, herbs, and seasonal vegetables, providing an ideal environment for hands-on learning and gentle outdoor activity.

The gardening group meets every two weeks from spring until September. Each session gives participants the opportunity to get involved in planting, weeding, watering, harvesting, and caring for the garden in a relaxed and supportive setting. These activities not only encourage physical movement but also help build a sense of routine, responsibility, and pride in seeing something grow and thrive over time.

Exploring nature beyond the garden

Our gardening sessions go beyond just tending to plants. Participants also enjoy nature walks through ‘The Orry,’ a beautiful park in the heart of historic Eaglesham, offering space to unwind and connect with the natural world. Walks to Picketlaw Reservoir and its surrounding fields are another favourite, allowing time for peaceful reflection, fresh air, and gentle exercise.

In addition, we incorporate activities such as birdwatching and creating small wildlife sanctuaries, which allow individuals to observe and protect local species. These nature-based experiences provide a calm and enriching environment where people can feel connected, included, and engaged.

Through gardening and outdoor exploration, our Wednesday sessions support physical wellbeing, emotional resilience, and a growing sense of community. It is a chance for participants to learn new skills, enjoy meaningful time outdoors, and experience the therapeutic power of nature together.

Join in the fun!

At Opeka, every day is a chance to try something new, discover hidden talents, and build confidence in a welcoming and supportive space.

Whether it’s through creative expression, hands-on activities, or simply joining in, we believe in the power of participation to spark joy and personal growth. You don’t need experience—just an open mind and a willingness to give it a go.

More than just activities, Opeka is a place where friendships are formed, laughter is shared, and everyone is encouraged to be themselves. It’s about growing together, learning from each other, and celebrating every step forward. Whatever your interests or abilities, you’ll find something here that inspires you.
